After spending 27 years with the Department of Homeland Security, Yvette Tay-Taylor decided it was time to do something for herself. In 2022, she retired from federal law enforcement and stepped into a completely different world: travel.

“My retirement from the federal government prompted me to pursue my dreams in the travel industry. I served as a Vacation Consultant prior to becoming a franchisee. I always had a passion for the travel industry and this was the perfect fit.”

In May 2024, that passion led her to open an Expedia Cruises center in West Caldwell, New Jersey. It was the only franchise option she seriously considered.

“The overwhelming support and the culture; the brand recognition. It was the perfect business that offered storefront visibility which is very rare in this current travel industry.”

A Moment That Made It Real

“The moment my signage went up on the store front; reality kicked in and I realized, wow, I did it! This is really happening. I am still pinching myself.”

Attending company conferences only reinforced that she had made the right choice.

“Going to the Anchor and National Conferences really solidifies everything for me.”

Support That Makes a Difference

Yvette says one of the biggest advantages of joining Expedia Cruises has been the consistent guidance and access to resources that help her grow.

“The coaching sessions from my Franchise Performance Coach is a key factor and is very helpful to my business. It keeps me accountable.”

Marketing programs have also played a big part in helping her get noticed.

“Being a part of the marketing program is key in this business; it helps with visibility and draws people in.”

Building a Team and Growing Together

When she first opened, Yvette hired a few Vacation Consultants who shared her enthusiasm for travel. They learned together and continue to grow as a team.

“My first key Vacation Consultants were instrumental to my business as we were all learning together. These Vacation Consultants are now Bronze Navigators and are continuing to do well with their business.”

Her own network of friends, colleagues and clients keeps her calendar full.

“I own the majority of the bookings due to my large circle of influence and past customers but I delegate leads and other bookings to the consultants.”

Lessons for Future Owners

Yvette believes that preparation is key for anyone thinking about joining the brand.

“Do your proper research and deep dive about the business as there are so many components. Be prepared to ask as many questions as possible to make sure you are making the right decision about becoming a franchisee.”

Finding Joy in Every Booking

Each day in the office is a reminder that she made the right move after retirement.

“I am excited to live my dream and have a business that I am passionate about. I am excited to see people happy about booking vacations. It’s euphoric.”
